This is a two channel video investigating identity, home and longing. In this video I document my first few conversations with Chief Paul Delaughter of the United States Navy, based in Boston MA, and Mohibba Fatima a homesick expatriate Pakistani girl who now lives in Albany, NY. The conversations offer windows into the worlds of these individuals and their concept of home. After interviewing several American soldiers and Pakistani immigrant women, I chose these two individuals to carry the conversation about place and identity. Their longing for the idealized homes they talk about were keys to my own dilemma of belonging. What ultimately fascinates me about these conversations is that while the authenticity of these ideal ‘worlds’ can be questioned the longing for them cannot. It is also powerful to think about being in the position of the artist and consider that, perhaps, being in-between might be a rich experience in itself.
